Chicago Bulls Point Guard Derrick Rose

Bulls Guard Derrick Rose offers to pay for some of the expenses of the funeral of a 6-month-old girl died after being shot five times in Chicago on Monday afternoon while her father was reportedly standing on the curb, changing her diaper on the front seat of a minivan.

It was the 62nd homicide of 2013 in the city, according to RedEye Chicago; last year, more than 500 homicides were reported in Chicago, a horrifying number that represented a massive increase over 2011.

As police search for the killer of 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins, outrage over her death spreads, and the outpouring of grief includes a gesture by the Chicago BullsDerrick Rose
Rose has offered to help pay for Jonylah's funeral expenses.
Others have come forward to donate money to a reward fund to help find the killer. Tuesday night, that reward fund stood at $11,000.

This isn't the first time that Rose has been connected to this kind of charitable, compassionate act, nor the first time he's been largely unwilling to elaborate on his connection to it. As Bryan Crawford of NBC Chicago's Outside Shot blog notes, "Rose was also said to have paid for the funeral of slain rapper Lil’ Jo Jo, who was shot and killed while riding a bike last September." The 18-year-old rapper, whose name was Joseph Coleman, grew up in Englewood, the same neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago where Rose was raised.

USA Equal Platforms Blog is sending our deepest condolences to the Watkins family. May time heal all pain....

If I had my child to raise all over again

  1. I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
  2. I'd finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
  3. I would do less correcting and more connecting.
  4. I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
  5. I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
  6. I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
  7. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
  8. I'd do more hugging and less tugging.

Sixteen Simple Powerful Pay It Forward Tips

16 Selfless ways to, " Pay it Forward"....

Pay It Forward movements expose students and our communities to positive reinforcement nationally, as a whole.

  1. Hold the door open for the person behind you.
  2. Introduce yourself.  Make new colleagues, classmates, etc. feel welcome.
  3. Listen intently to people’s stories without trying to fix everything.
  4. Donate blood.  One pint of blood can save up to three lives.  Locate your nearest blood drive.
  5. Volunteer at a hospital, homeless shelter, nursing home, etc.  Get outside of yourself and help others.
  6. Inspire others online.
  7. Check up on someone who lives alone, elderly, friends.... just be a friend.
  8. Let someone with only a few items cut you in line at the grocery store.  It just feels like the right thing to do!
  9. Spread good news.
  10. Give words of encouragement to someone about their dreams, no matter how big or small they are.
  11. Babysit for couples or single parents who don’t get out much so they can have some alone time.
  12. Look for ways to save a few extra bucks a month and then pay it forward.
  13. Help someone get active.  There’s a coworker or acquaintance in your life who wants to get healthy, but needs a helping hand.  Offer to go walking or running together or join a gym together.
  14. If someone you love really likes something (a meal, a favor, etc.) give it to them when they least expect it.
  15. Make a difference in the life of a child.  Give them your time and undivided attention.   READ TO YOUR CHILDREN!!!
  16. Pay for the person in line behind you.

Create a care package and send it to an active duty military unit.
